Stats suspended, including graphics generation
Stats suspended, including graphics generation
Hi all.
Despite the server move, my web host has informed me tonight that boinc.mundayweb.com cannot continue for the time being due to the load put on their web server.
Therefore, at the moment, I have suspended graphics generation and stats updates until the time that a new home is found. If anyone knows of cheap dedicated web server space or would kindly like to donate some space, please let me know.
Apologies to all, but I have tried my best to keep the site going til now.
Neil.

The site gets about 3-5 million hits a month.
Each hit causes a few MySQL queries to be performed to grab your stats. Also, the images are dynamically created which puts a small processing load on the server.
Also, a bigger hit on the server's resources are the daily cron jobs that update the databases.
My site is hosted on a shared web server. As my site has been generated more and more load, it has affected the performance of other user's web sites. Of course, this was never my intention.
My web host has quoted £170 per month for dedicated hosting. This is something that is way out of my league!
I'm very sad that this has happened, as I had quite enjoyed running the site and being part of the community. I know a minority may be very annoyed that I've suspended the site, but it's out of my hands.

Neil.
I'd be willing to contribute some bandwidth and disk space. Unfortunately, since I already use 25% of the resources on my shared server, I'm thinking Dreamhost might object to me processing any more load on my account.
I was already automatically grabbing my images off your server and storing them locally. It'd be easy to provide a similar situation for others.

Neil, maybe you can take a look at http://www.lunarpages.com. Lunarpages has shared and dedicated hosting plans, the latter starts at $99 (£52.65) a month.
Myself I've got 2 accounts with Lunarpages and I'm satisfied with their service.

Check out DreamHost
So long as you generate less than 2.2 TeraBytes of bandwidth usage per month, you could go with the Strictly Business package at DreamHost for $63.95/month. Set up a paypal link and ask us users to help pay whatever the Google ads don't cover.

(That's still shared hosting, but it's worth checking out.)
(Note: I've never used DreamHost myself, but I've always thought I would try them if I didn't run my own servers from home.)

Shoot me an e-mail to my profile address, or add me to MSN ([email protected]) - I can help. I have a spanking new dual opteron coming online this week and it needs something to get its teeth into

Re: Check out DreamHost
Dreamhost have a limit of 60 CPU minutes/day - ie, they're selling usage-based hosting not disk/bandwidth-based (course most people don't hit the limits so it's great marketing)brianwc wrote:So long as you generate less than 2.2 TeraBytes of bandwidth usage per month, you could go with the Strictly Business package at DreamHost for $63.95/month. Neil, I'd give you access to run your signatures off the server that also runs the Team OcUK BOINC stats if I thought it had the spare CPU capacity (and wasn't going on the fritz every few days like it is now).
Beansprout, who made the offer above, knows all too well the pain that BOINC stats sites can cause, so he does not make that offer lightly.

Bytemark are good too
I just bought a virtual linux host from bytemark:
http://www.bytemark.co.uk
You get full root access from £150+VAT/year and they do dedicated hosting as well from £60/month. So far I've been very impressed!

hurricane electric - good host
You might also try hurricane electric (http://www.he.net/). They offer full shell access, and if you were to register as a non-profit, they might be willing to donate bandwidth. Either way, compared to some of the services above they have reasonable rates. If you get 5 million hits/month, and return a 2k graphic, that would require 10 GB of traffic. he.net's starter account offers 25 GB traffic for $9.95/month. I've had several accounts with them for more than 10 years.
