Server outage 02/10/06 - 03/10/06

Post by Neil »

Hi all,

The site was offline from around 17:15 BST yesterday until 17:10 today.

Some of you may have seen the site was back earlier this afternoon, but this was a copy of the site from September.

A back-up from yesterday has now been restored and appears to be working.

Some forum threads have been lost though - these were ones created or replied to yesterday.

Any users that signed up yesterday may have lost their accounts as well.

Apologies on behalf of my web host for the outage.

Neil.

I got worried when I saw an account suspended message.

I thought the bandwidth problem had returned.

Me too!

Bandwidth is not really an issue anymore thanks to the mirrors, and also thanks to stopping the Googlebot from caching all of my stats images!!

The issue is now processor load due to the number of MySQL qeueries generated by the site.

I will be moving to statically generated images before the end of the year. Most of the code is now in place on my test version of the site - just a few bits to tidy up before the code is upload.

It will be quiet a big change, but I hope it will go ok.

Look out for more details nearer the time.

Cheers,

Neil.
