Hi,

Have updated my system to include a nice, fancy news admin section for myself. This has the added benefit of allowing me to provide more info in the RSS feed and the updates section.

Enjoy,

Neil.

Hi,

I did try changing the MIME type to application/atom+xml, but it causes a user's web browser to prompt them to download the feed, which I didn't think was too user friendly.

I haven't tried the "type=" attribute yet for the RSS elements.

erm, unless you're using the Atom format then don't serve it as atom

using application/xml will display in the browser, and is much better than text/xml (because it needs to be parsed before being displayed) (FYI the "ideal" MIME Type for rss is applicaion/rss+xml)
the reason they don't display in IE is beacuse it doesn't handle those types, firefox only displays application/rss+xml or application/xml, it doesn't handle application/atom+xml (yet) which might be the correct behaviour, but from what i recall application/atom+xml isn't explicitly official (neither is application/rss+xml actually, they're "extensions" of appication/xml, which is allowed for more specific content, because application/xml could be anything)

also the "type=" attribute is for atom only as well (as far as i know)
you'll need to read the RSS spec to be sure thou

so if you're sticking with RSS then serve as applicaiton/xml, and don't use the "type=" attributes

Really well - only 1.77 GB for February.

Looks like I may be able to reduce my hosting package to save some cash!

m10 has used just over 2 gb this month ... its hanging quite steady .. but there are more mirrors appearing now and then, so im guessing it would have gone UP for the last few months.

Keep it coming .. only another 598 GB to burn this month :P

lol. As a result of the reduced bandwidth usage, I have re-instated the capability for MundayWeb to generate the graphics.

Well, all or about all of that month I have not my signatures to use.

So, I signed for boincsynergy signatures too.

*Offcourse, site offline, does not generate traffic

I dont understand how u can live with that limited traffic.

My small site has a traffic of about 6 gigabytes/day
http://roberto.dnsalias.com
my site traffic

ps: There are some isps that allow u have a personal website
with unlimited traffic, by free, of by a small fixed rate/month
*generally with ugly urls
However there are free services of url masquerading/redirection too eg:
http://www.dyndns.com/
http://www.dnsexit.com/
*these services are free to supply dns services too
*the 1st one has five redundant dns servers around the world - never fail
*the second is equally good
so, u can run u webserver on u own pc into u bedroom
Then, only need of a nsp to supply connectivity,
and may be, a nobreak with external bateries, to keep u site online 24/365

Cheers

How come?

As far as I know the signatures have been working fine from MundayWeb. I've had one disgruntled user leave my site as he says my stats aren't up to date. XtremeLab is the only problem at the mo, and it's out of my hands.

20 GB / month bandwidth is ample for a website - heck 1 GB is more than enough for most. My host also provides UPS, 24/7 support etc.

In the UK, if you try to server a website off your broadband connection (mine is 1.1 Mbps), it's ok for a few hits, but anything more and it'll struggle to cope.

Cheers,

Neil.

Then, host u webserver out of UK.
eg: US , Australia, Norway, Brazil, Denmark ..

Try this one:
http://www.thefreecountry.com/webhostin ... hphp.shtml

-or- do a seach on http://www.google.com for
free web hosting "unlimited traffic"

for more options

ps: keep a backup (inactive) of u webserver on u pc

to use, If something out-of-u-control do happens.
in that event, is only finding, a new free host (no charge)
and uploading u backup there to the new free web host
and then updating ip of mundayweb, on u free dns service. eg: dyndns

ThePlanet is not good :!: I remeber from the times of Find-a-Drug
of infinite problems caused by this one.

Code: Select all

OS Server Last changed IP address Netblock Owner
Linux Apache 6-Jul-2004 69.93.254.178 ThePlanet.com Internet Services
[/code]

In the UK it's only residential broadband that has low bandwidth - businesses, Universities etc. have much fatter pipes.

As it happens, my webserver is actually in the US ;-)

On the back-up front, I do all the development of the site offline on my desktop PC before unleashing it on my faithful users!

EWWWW ... Free webhosts are the worst!

You generally get adverts and popups all over the site, and if the server goes down your a bit stuck.

I think Neil prefers his .com domain to a "mundayweb.dyndns.com" as dyndns addresses dont really look that professional.

Also, with a paid host you are guarenteed a level of service (usually) whereas free hosts dont do anything to try and save your site if a server starts crashing etc.

nevermind the fact that the "do it yourself" method is admittedly great for the level of control and good for experience, but the cost is much higher than using a webhost, who will be able to offer better reliability and stability than you will from a "home server" setup

any major/professional site should be hosted in a data centre anyway, regardless of most other factors

the most important thing is that the site works, and is available as much as possible, which is best achieved by using a web host and with a server housed in a data centre, so Neil has made the right choice in this instance, and i'm sure it's much easier for him as well

each to their own, let bigons be bigons :)

if you're looking for some facts, well this site seems far more stable than the more popular synergy sites, i guess the users must be really loyal over there, oh well
good on Neil for making the appropriate choices, and at his own personal cost, to provide us users with good service (and lets keep in mind that this is all just a hobby, and Neil is kindly providing this service for free, out of his own pocket, something i'm sure his wife isn't too happy about ;) )
